In the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy, Gareth Southgate is expected to opt for Harry Maguire as his starting player, despite the strong form displayed by Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.
According to reports from the Daily Mail, Southgate will resist the urge to select Marc Guehi and will instead rely on Maguire for the 7.45 pm match. During the previous international break, Guehi had started both matches against Ukraine and Scotland, partnering with Maguire in the former. However, with John Stones returning from injury, it is likely that he will be in the starting lineup.
This situation presents a welcome selection dilemma for any manager, given the strong performances of players like Fikayo Tomori and Lewis Dunk this season.
Maguire’s club form at the beginning of the season has not been ideal. As the former Manchester United captain, he has struggled to secure regular playing time for the second consecutive season. Maguire has started just two games, one in the Premier League and one in the Carabao Cup, and has made two additional appearances as a substitute. Notably, he has yet to feature in a single minute of Champions League action.
