Simpson explained their predicament, stating, “With him being out, and Dylan McGeouch not being available as well, we are a little bit short on numbers.
We’re going to have to have a look around and see if there are any free agents who are fit and ready to come in, and who can come and make an impact straight away.”

- Matty Longstaff: Newcastle United released the 23-year-old midfielder at the end of the previous season, and he remains without a club. Longstaff, a former England youth international, made 20 appearances for Newcastle United in various competitions and had loan spells at Aberdeen, Mansfield Town, and Colchester United.
- Tom Pett: An experienced player in the Football League, Tom Pett has amassed 464 games in his career. He has been without a club since parting ways with Port Vale during the summer. At 31 years old, Pett could be a valuable addition to Carlisle United’s midfield, having previously played for Stevenage and Lincoln City.
- Jordon Mutch: Jordon Mutch, a former player for Cardiff City, QPR, and Crystal Palace, spent time at Crawley Town last season. Currently unattached, Mutch has an extensive footballing background, having played for clubs like Vancouver Whitecaps, Gyeongnam, Aalesunds, and Western Sydney Wanderers.
