According to Vikings reporter Ben Goessling, who shared his thoughts on a local radio program, McCarthy’s chances of starting Week 1 are slim, estimated at around 10%.
Goessling pointed out that Coach Kevin O’Connell prefers to avoid thrusting rookies into starting roles prematurely, believing they benefit from ample time for development.
While there have been instances of rookie quarterbacks excelling immediately, it’s not the norm.
The 2023 season serves as a case study; while C.J. Stroud propelled the Houston Texans to playoff contention after being a strategic fit, Bryce Young, chosen just before him by the Carolina Panthers, didn’t fare as well.
