The Dallas Cowboys have expressed their interest in acquiring former Indianapolis Colts linebacker Shaq Leonard, a move that has also caught the attention of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Leonard’s unexpected release during the current season has triggered a competitive scenario for his signing.
Following confirmation of the Cowboys’ interest by owner Jerry Jones, team writer Patrick Walker has offered additional insights into the ongoing pursuit.
In response to a fan’s inquiry about the urgency of securing Leonard before the Eagles, Walker emphasized patience, echoing Jones’ sentiments.
On November 24, Walker shared, “The #Cowboys have reached out to him and are currently in communication with him and his representation.
It’s primarily focused on the medical aspect, and evaluations are underway by the #Cowboys. If the medical clearance is obtained, then financial discussions will follow, but not before.”
While the Cowboys’ position with Leonard is clearer, fans remain unaware of the information being uncovered by both teams. Leonard’s well-documented injury history poses challenges not only to his on-field performance but also to potential contract negotiations.
The Eagles’ interest adds another layer to the competition. The prospect of Leonard joining Philadelphia and making a significant impact would be perceived as a loss for Dallas, intensifying the stakes.
Jerry Jones addressed the Shaq Leonard interest after the Cowboys’ impressive 45-10 victory over the Washington Commanders. Jones confirmed contact with the free agent linebacker but maintained a level of ambiguity about the team’s interest level.
“Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says the team has made contact with free agent LB Shaq Leonard, but their level of interest is still being determined,” reported ESPN’s Ed Werder on November 23.
“The team is performing due diligence because Leonard had two recent back surgeries that may be impacting his performance level.”

Jones’ update follows his typical pattern of revealing key information while leaving the level of interest open-ended. However, the cautionary approach is warranted given Leonard’s history of two major back surgeries in the past two years, both related to the same nerve issue.
Despite Leonard’s return to the field this year, his performance has not mirrored his two-time All-Pro status. With 65 tackles in nine games but no sacks, forced fumbles, passes defended, or interceptions, the Colts opted to release him mid-season.
The decision was influenced by Leonard’s dissatisfaction with his utilization and his failure to deliver plays that justified his significant contract.
