Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna provides a ‘crucial’ update on Burns and squad fitness ahead of Rotherham’s return…

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has provided an update on the fitness of the squad ahead of their return to face Rotherham. McKenna revealed that Wes Burns is currently undergoing consultations with a specialist regarding his shoulder injury. The 28-year-old winger sustained this injury while playing for Wales against Gibraltar in Wrexham.

The club is hopeful that they can manage his recovery without resorting to surgery, which could potentially lead to a lengthy absence. McKenna mentioned that they’ll have a clearer picture of the plan following Burns’ specialist appointment.

Regarding the expected duration of Burns’ absence, McKenna explained that it largely depends on whether the treatment involves surgery or more conservative methods. Surgical repair would entail a recovery period of several months, while the chances of healing through non-surgical means are being explored. In the latter case, the recovery period would likely be measured in weeks rather than months. However, the situation remains dynamic, and ongoing monitoring will be necessary.

McKenna also shared that striker Freddie Ladapo will not be available for the upcoming match against his former club, Rotherham, due to an Achilles injury he sustained during the international break. Ladapo is currently consulting with a specialist to assess the extent of the injury, with the hope that it is not a major issue. His availability for future matches will depend on the outcome of this assessment.

Additionally, McKenna noted that center-back Elkan Baggott missed Indonesia’s second World Cup qualifier against Brunei during the break due to a minor back injury.
