In a move sure to thrill hockey fans and documentary lovers alike, Netflix has officially announced the release date for its highly anticipated original film, “The Underdog,” centered around Chicago Blackhawks icon and NHL legend Bobby Hull. The documentary is set to premiere globally on June 15, 2025.
The film, which has been in development for over a year, explores the complicated and iconic legacy of Hull — widely regarded as one of the most dominant forces in NHL history. Known as “The Golden Jet” for his blistering speed and powerful slapshot, Hull helped revolutionize the game during his 15-year tenure with the Blackhawks, earning Hall of Fame honors and capturing the imagination of fans throughout the 1960s and 70s.
“Bobby Hull was larger than life — both on and off the ice,” said executive producer Mark Shapiro. “This documentary doesn’t just celebrate his achievements, it examines the grit, controversy, and complexity behind the legend.”
“The Underdog” will feature rare archival footage, interviews with former teammates, family members, NHL historians, and current hockey stars who were influenced by Hull’s groundbreaking career. The film also explores the challenges Hull faced both professionally and personally, including the highs of winning the Hart Trophy and the lows of off-ice controversies that often complicated his legacy.
Hull, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 84, remains one of the most polarizing figures in hockey history. Still, his contributions to the Blackhawks franchise and the sport at large are undeniable. He left the NHL with over 600 career goals and played a pivotal role in the league’s expansion era.
“We wanted to show who Bobby Hull really was — not just the legend on the ice, but the human being behind the mask,” said director Alana DeForge.
With Netflix’s recent success in sports storytelling, including series like Quarterback and Untold, “The Underdog” is expected to generate major interest among hockey fans and casual viewers alike.
