Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos has issued a formal apology following the backlash over his inappropriate comments made during a recent game against the Miami Marlins. The incident, which unfolded during a tense moment in the dugout, sparked criticism from fans, teammates, and league officials, prompting Castellanos to address the matter publicly.
During the Phillies’ matchup against the Marlins at Citizens Bank Park, Castellanos was caught on a hot mic making remarks that many viewed as unprofessional and disrespectful. While the full context of his statements remains unclear, the broadcast audio and fan recordings quickly circulated online, igniting controversy within the baseball community.
In a statement released Tuesday morning, Castellanos expressed regret for his actions:
“I want to sincerely apologize to my teammates, coaches, the fans, and the entire Phillies organization for the comments I made during our game against the Marlins. My words were poorly chosen, and I understand how they may have come across. I let my emotions get the better of me in a competitive moment, but that’s no excuse for behavior that doesn’t reflect the values of our team.”
Castellanos went on to reaffirm his commitment to the team and emphasized his desire to move forward in a positive direction:
“I take full responsibility for what I said, and I’m committed to learning from this. We’re in this together as a team, and I’ll do everything I can to earn back the respect of those I may have let down.”
Phillies manager Rob Thomson acknowledged the apology during a post-game media session, calling it a “necessary and meaningful step,” and praised Castellanos for taking accountability. “Nick is a passionate player, and while things sometimes boil over in this game, we always expect our players to carry themselves with respect and professionalism,” Thomson said.
The league has not announced any formal disciplinary action as of yet, but MLB spokesperson Michael Ross confirmed that the incident is under review.
The Phillies remain focused on their season ambitions, with the organization hopeful that this moment serves as a learning opportunity not just for Castellanos, but for the entire clubhouse. As the team continues its playoff push, both fans and teammates will be watching to see how Castellanos responds—on and off the field.
