Throughout the offseason, Dylan Cease’s name frequently surfaced in trade rumors, particularly as uncertainty surrounded the San Diego Padres’ direction. Given his Georgia roots and the Braves’ clear need for rotation depth, Atlanta was often speculated as a natural fit for the right-hander. Yet, despite the buzz, no deal materialized — Cease remained in San Diego.
However, the possibility of a homecoming may not be off the table just yet.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Padres are hoping to re-sign one of their two starters set to hit free agency this offseason — Cease or Michael King. Notably, Heyman reports that San Diego appears more inclined to prioritize retaining King over Cease.
That development could reopen the door for Atlanta to pursue Cease, a move fans have eagerly hoped for since the winter. With Braves president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos known for bold, strategic acquisitions, don’t be surprised if this storyline gains traction once again as the season progresses.
