In recent reports, it has been revealed that the Cincinnati Reds have successfully acquired another pitcher. According to MLB Network insider Mark Sheldon, the Reds have inked a two-year, $26 million contract with free-agent pitcher Nick Martinez.
The deal includes an opt-out option after the culmination of the 2024 season. Although the Reds have not officially confirmed the signing, it is contingent upon the completion of a physical examination.

Martinez, aged 33, previously served as a versatile player for the San Diego Padres over the past two seasons, notably achieving a 6-4 record with a 3.43 ERA in a career-high 63 appearances during the 2023 season, covering 110 1/3 innings. Before his tenure with the Padres, Martinez spent four years pitching in Japan and also played for the Texas Rangers from 2014 to 2017.
This signing follows closely on the heels of the Reds’ recent acquisition of relief pitcher Emilio Pagan. Martinez’s role within the Reds’ roster is yet to be officially defined, as he could potentially contribute to the team’s young pitching rotation or take on a reliever role based on the team’s requirements.
Presently, the Cincinnati starting pitchers consist of relatively inexperienced players such as Hunter Greene, Graham Ashcroft, Andrew Abbott, Nick Lodolo, Brandon Williamson, and Connor Phillips, none of whom have more than two years of experience. Martinez’s inclusion is seen as a valuable addition, providing essential veteran experience to the team’s roster.
