Potential Coaching Candidates if Rivera is Fired…
Following the dismissal of defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and defensive backs coach Brent Vieselmeyer by the Washington Commanders, there is a growing sense that Ron Rivera, now serving as the playcaller on the defensive side, might complete the 2023 season.
Despite coming close to defeating the defending NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles twice this season, Washington’s overall performance in the 2023 campaign has been disappointing. Quarterback Sam Howell has displayed positive moments, but his 13 interceptions and 55 sacks behind a struggling offensive line have raised concerns.
The rookie cornerback Emmanuel Forbes, drafted 16th overall this year, has been a letdown, and last year’s first-round pick Jahan Dotson’s 42 catches for 435 yards in 12 games fall short of expectations.
The trade of pass rushers Montez Sweat and Chase Young before the deadline has left the team with urgent needs on the edge. While no final decision has been reached, it appears plausible that new owner Josh Harris might part ways with Rivera and other high-ranking staff members at the end of the season.
If such a scenario unfolds, here are five potential replacements:
- Eric Bieniemy: Offensive Coordinator, Commanders
- Harris could distinguish himself among league owners by giving Bieniemy an opportunity to lead the franchise, settling the longstanding debate about his suitability for a head coaching role. Bieniemy’s offensive expertise is well-established, and the Chiefs have noticeably missed his presence this season. The continuity of an offensive system could be valuable if Howell is seen as the long-term quarterback. However, uncertainties linger about how players, who reportedly had reservations about Bieniemy’s intensity, and Harris perceive him.
- Bill Belichick: Head Coach, New England Patriots
- Speculation in November hinted at the Commanders possibly attempting to trade for Belichick. While the allure of hiring the greatest coach in the sport’s history exists, the fit seems questionable. Players who had concerns about Bieniemy’s intensity might not appreciate “the Patriot Way.” Additionally, Belichick’s recent struggles in player evaluations raise doubts about his suitability for a strong role in personnel decisions.
- Bobby Slowik: Offensive Coordinator, Houston Texans
- As the offensive coordinator for DeMeco Ryans, Slowik has contributed to a surprisingly successful season in Houston, aiding in the development of quarterback C.J. Stroud and receiver Tank Dell. The appeal of bringing in someone with a successful background and a connection to the Shanahan coaching tree may be attractive as the Commanders seek to move beyond past dysfunction.
- Jim Harbaugh: Head Coach, University of Michigan
- Harbaugh, having flirted with an NFL return in recent years, may find this the opportune time to reenter the professional ranks. Despite a challenging season at Michigan, Harbaugh boasts an impressive NFL resume, leading the 49ers to three NFC Championship Game appearances and a Super Bowl. With a chance to reshape the Commanders, Harbaugh could quickly return the team to contention.
- Ben Johnson: Offensive Coordinator, Detroit Lions
- Despite a Thanksgiving Day loss, the Lions stand at 8-3 and are prominent in the NFC playoff race. Johnson’s offensive prowess has played a crucial role in reviving the franchise. While the transition from a successful offensive mind to a head coach is not guaranteed, Johnson’s impact on Jared Goff’s career and his potential fit in Washington, whether with Howell or a drafted quarterback, make him a compelling candidate. The key question remains whether Johnson would be interested in the Washington job or have more appealing offers elsewhere.
