New Zealand’s squad has received a significant update ahead of their World Cup 2023 match against India on October 22. Tim Southee, the veteran fast bowler, has recovered from a finger injury and is now eligible for selection.
The New Zealand team has been eagerly anticipating Southee’s return to the lineup, as he had been dealing with a thumb fracture sustained during the ODIs against England before the World Cup. Following the injury, Southee underwent surgery, causing him to miss the initial World Cup matches against England, Netherlands, and Bangladesh.
Unfortunately, New Zealand has been plagued by other injuries as well during their campaign. Captain Kane Williamson, who made a comeback in the match against Bangladesh after nearly a year-long absence due to a limb injury, suffered an unexpected thumb fracture when hit by a throw from Shakib Al Hasan. As a result, he was sidelined for the upcoming matches, with hopes of returning later in the tournament.
In a press conference, stand-in captain Tom Latham provided updates on both players, stating, “Kane is still recovering from his thumb injury, and his progress is day by day. We are hopeful he will be available for the later stages of the tournament. As for Tim, he is ready for selection.”
Considering the swinging conditions in Dharamshala, Tim Southee is likely to be included in the playing eleven. This means that either Matt Henry or Lockie Ferguson will make way for the experienced bowler. Ferguson’s proficiency in delivering death overs may secure his position, resulting in Southee replacing Henry in the team.
The highly-anticipated match between India and New Zealand will feature two undefeated teams, each having won all four of their fixtures. New Zealand currently leads the points table with eight points and an impressive Net Run Rate (NRR) of +1.923. India follows closely with the same number of points but a slightly lower NRR of +1.659.
