Walsall currently holds the 13th position in the league, having accumulated 18 points from their first 13 matches.
They are just four points away from securing a spot in the League Two play-offs, following their impressive 4-1 victory over Gillingham in their most recent game.
The team, under the guidance of Mat Sadler, is eager to build on this success as they prepare for an upcoming away match against Newport County this Friday.
One notable development is the extension of young striker Marvellous Onabirekhanlen’s loan at Chasetown for an additional month.
This move aims to provide him with valuable experience, as he had previously spent time with Worcester City and Stourbridge to aid in his development.
Onabirekhanlen will return to Walsall in November, and he isn’t the sole player currently out on loan, with Ronan Maher finding himself with Rushall Olympic.
In their quest to strengthen the squad, Walsall has been exploring the possibility of acquiring free agents.
The retirement of defender Chris Hussey, aged 34, has created a potential gap that needs filling. Mat Sadler has mentioned, “We’ve had a couple of players come in for trials recently, and we are in the process of deciding on our next steps.
There may be further evaluations next week, and our course of action will become clearer once we’ve assessed a few more candidates. It’s vital that we select the right individual – someone who is genuinely eager to contribute and not merely seeking a paycheck.”
Scott Dann, a former Blackburn Rovers and Crystal Palace center-back, had been linked to a move to Walsall after leaving Reading at the end of the previous season.
However, Sadler quickly dismissed this speculation, stating, “Someone has made an assumption that doesn’t hold water.
I have no knowledge about Scott’s potential transfer. We did attempt to bring in a new player, but they opted for a different club, one in a higher division. We conducted trials with several individuals, but I wasn’t willing to bring in just anyone.”
In light of Chris Hussey’s departure, Sadler acknowledges the need for experienced players in the future but emphasized the importance of making the right choice, saying, “What we want to avoid is hastily bringing in someone who isn’t the right fit, as this could impact our budget for January transfers. It’s a delicate balance. We’ve explored our options but haven’t identified the perfect candidate yet.”
Sadler’s comments indicate that Walsall might postpone further reinforcements until the January transfer window, where they can consider bringing in additional players to bolster their squad.
