“I’m not sure…” Carlton Palmer outlines two major setbacks with Leeds United and Kalvin Phillips transfer talk…

It seems that Leeds United is making strides in their quest for promotion from the Championship this season. Alongside Leicester City and Southampton, they have been favored by many to secure a quick return to the Premier League after their demoralizing relegation last season. It took some time for them to find their footing, but under the guidance of promotion specialist Daniel Farke, they have embarked on a successful run, winning four of their last six second-tier matches, positioning them in fifth place a quarter of the way through the season.

However, the prospect of Kalvin Phillips returning to Leeds has emerged as an unexpected twist. The beloved Leeds fan, who joined Manchester City for £45 million, has struggled to secure regular playing time at the Etihad Stadium, failing to impress Pep Guardiola due to the abundance of world-class options at the manager’s disposal. This has led to reports of Phillips being considered for a transfer, with a surprising preference for a return to Leeds, as suggested by Luke Edwards of The Telegraph on BBC’s Football Gossip Daily show.

Pundit Carlton Palmer, though, is skeptical about the possibility of Phillips coming back to his roots. He pointed out the challenges in an exclusive statement to Football League World, saying, “Kalvin Phillips has been linked with a nostalgic move back to Leeds United. I very much doubt this will happen, as I’m not sure Kalvin would want to play in the Championship, and Leeds would not be able to afford his salary in any event.

I do believe Kalvin needs to move from Man City, and I questioned the sense of the move at the time. With just 15 games in two seasons, he miraculously retains his spot in the England team. I understand the financial aspects of the move, but as a professional footballer, it’s about playing the game. Two years have been wasted, in my opinion, and he won’t get them back. I only hope he doesn’t waste any more time sitting on the bench at City.”

The likelihood of Leeds United successfully re-signing Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City is uncertain, with Palmer’s reservations emphasizing the difficulties a player of Phillips’ caliber might face in dropping down to the Championship.
