Tony Dorigo’s preseason remarks regarding a 25-year-old Leeds player have been absolutely accurate. Prior to the start of the season, Dorigo foresaw that Dan James could become a valuable asset for Leeds United.
Dorigo expressed this opinion while providing commentary on LUTV during Leeds’ first summer friendly. He believed that James would play a significant role under Daniel Farke. This prediction was especially noteworthy considering that James had been considered surplus to requirements at Leeds just a year after his £25 million transfer from Manchester United.
In the summer of 2022, James embarked on a season-long loan to Fulham but struggled to make an impact, starting only seven Premier League matches. Following Leeds’ relegation from the Premier League, James returned to Elland Road as a Championship player.
The friendly against Manchester United marked James’ return to Leeds, and Dorigo anticipated that he could make a substantial impact in the Championship.
Dorigo stated, “He could be a highly valuable addition. In the past, we often played him up front, a position I don’t believe suits him. However, I think this season he can be a real force and a crucial player for us.”
Indeed, Dorigo’s prediction has held true so far, even if James can be occasionally frustrating to watch due to his decision-making. In the current Championship season, James has already provided four assists, second only to former Leeds defender Leif Davis, who has five.
His speed has proven to be a challenge for defenders, and if he continues to deliver performances like those against West Brom and Watford, achieving double figures in assists should be well within reach.
