Thompson, a native of Macclesfield, had previous stints in the academies of Manchester United and Everton and made one appearance for Burnley’s first team before his move to Sunderland.
During his time at Sunderland, which lasted just over a year, Thompson contributed five goals and one assist in 13 matches for the U21s but was unable to break into the senior squad. Although his contract was initially set to expire at the end of the season, both Sunderland and the 21-year-old have agreed to terminate the contract early, allowing Thompson to seek a new club as a free agent.
Robin Nicholls, the Head of the academy, revealed ongoing discussions about Thompson’s limited playing time, and now he has the freedom to explore opportunities beyond the current transfer window.
While there had been hopes that Thompson would eventually earn a spot in the first team, the reality has been different. Recognizing the importance of regular playing time for a young player’s development, it is seen as mutually beneficial for him to embark on a new journey away from Sunderland.
Sunderland has a history of nurturing young talents into the senior squad, but Thompson will now be seeking to showcase his abilities at a different club. With substantial experience in various prestigious academies, he aims to demonstrate his potential on the senior stage at his next destination, although the exact opportunity remains uncertain. Time will reveal where his next chapter unfolds.
