Gillingham and Wrexham are about to miss out on signing a former Leeds United player, Stuart McKinstry. McKinstry, a 21-year-old winger, was of interest to both clubs but is now set to join Scottish Championship side Queen’s Park.

Both Gillingham and Wrexham are strong contenders for promotion in League Two for the 2023-24 season.

However, despite their strong squads and capable managers, they were unable to secure the services of McKinstry, who became a free agent after leaving Leeds United when his contract was not renewed.

Stuart McKinstry began his career at Motherwell in Scotland and later joined Leeds United’s academy in 2019. He showed versatility by playing as a winger and in midfield for Leeds’ under-21 team.

McKinstry made his senior debut for Leeds in 2021 and also appeared in the Premier League. In the 2022-23 season, he went on loan to Motherwell and had a successful spell, scoring goals and providing assists.

Gillingham was in need of wingers, and McKinstry’s flexibility could have benefited the team. Wrexham, on the other hand, typically used wing-backs in their system, but McKinstry’s skills could have made him a valuable right wing-back or a midfield option.

In the end, McKinstry has chosen to return to Scotland and join Queen’s Park, which is close to his birthplace. This move might be the fresh start he needs for his career, but it represents a missed opportunity for an EFL club to sign him earlier.
