In the latest Tottenham news, Ange Postecoglou’s team is now just one point behind the current Premier League champions, Manchester City.
Gary Neville has given his assessment of Tottenham’s chances of winning the Premier League after their thrilling late victory against Liverpool.
The much-anticipated match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was overshadowed by VAR controversies, with two red cards given to the visitors and an incorrectly disallowed goal by Luis Diaz.
Tottenham secured a dramatic 95th-minute own goal from Joel Matip, marking their second consecutive home win and maintaining Ange Postecoglou’s undefeated start in the league.
Manchester City’s loss to Wolves on Saturday means that Tottenham is now just one point behind the reigning champions, alongside their North London rivals, Arsenal.
Tottenham’s ability to collect seven points from matches against Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal is a significant statement, particularly considering they only earned one point from those fixtures last season.
While it’s still early in the season, some suggest that Tottenham might be entering the Premier League title race.
However, Neville disagrees and provides a clear reason why he believes they won’t be able to keep up with Man City, Liverpool, and Arsenal.
Neville stated on Sky Sports, “I don’t believe they are contenders for the title. When you look at the substitutes coming on at the end, it’s apparent they aren’t title contenders. I think they will be far behind in that race. However, they do exhibit spirit and resilience beyond what I expected, particularly considering their performance in the North London Derby last week.
There is a positive atmosphere at the stadium, on the field, and a strong connection between the manager, the players, and the fans. Unlike in previous years, we’re not focusing too much on the boardroom situation at Spurs.
There’s definitely something promising happening at Spurs.
It may not always be as perfect as it appears, and there will be challenges ahead, but I anticipate they will have a better season than I initially thought.”
Despite Tottenham’s unbeaten run into October, Postecoglou acknowledges the current state of the club and how many transfer windows it will take to shape the squad according to his preferences.
Postecoglou mentioned, “We need a more robust squad, and currently, we’re not close to having the squad I desire. It will likely take a couple of transfer windows, and then it depends on the rapid development of some of our players.
If they progress quickly, we might only need some fine-tuning in the next few transfer windows, but it could still require significant work.
